The productivity trap no one talks about
Thursday, November 6, 2025
We're so focused on doing more that we forget to ask: more of what?
I fell into this trap for years. My todo list was always full. I was always "busy." I felt productive.
But when I looked back at what I actually accomplished? Not much that mattered.
Here's the thing: productivity is neutral. Being efficient at the wrong things just gets you to the wrong place faster.
The trap looks like this:
- You optimize your morning routine (but never ship the project)
- You organize your files (but never create anything new)
- You read about productivity (but never apply it)
The trap feels productive. That's what makes it a trap.
**The question that changed everything:**
"If this is the only thing I accomplish today, will I be satisfied?"
Most of my todo list fails this test. Most of it is busywork disguised as work.
Now I start each day by identifying the ONE thing that would actually move the needle. Everything else is secondary.
This is uncomfortable. It means admitting that most of what I do doesn't really matter. But it's also liberating.
You don't need to do more. You need to do more of what matters.
Less, but better,
