The 'lazy' morning routine that changed everything
Thursday, January 8, 2026
I used to wake up at 5am.
I had the whole routine: meditation, journaling, exercise, cold shower, protein shake, gratitude practice. All before 7am.
I was exhausted by noon.
Now I wake up at 7:30. I drink coffee. I stare out the window for a bit. I start working when I feel like it, usually around 9.
My output has doubled.
Here's the thing: that 5am routine wasn't actually productive. It was performative productivity. I was so busy doing "productive morning things" that I had no energy left for actual work.
The cult of the early morning has lied to us. Tim Cook wakes up at 4am, therefore waking up at 4am will make you Tim Cook? That's not how causation works.
Some people are morning people. I am not. Fighting my biology for years didn't make me successfulโit made me tired and cranky.
So I ran an experiment. For one month, I would:
- Wake up naturally (no alarm)
- Skip the morning routine theater
- Start working when my brain came online
The results surprised me:
- 40% more deep work hours per week
- Better quality output (fewer rewrites)
- Actually enjoying mornings for the first time in years
The "lazy" morning routine isn't lazy at all. It's just honest about how I actually function.
Your mileage may vary. Maybe you ARE a 5am person. But if you've been forcing it for years and still feel like garbage, maybe stop?
